A, B, C, D, E, F, G…

The alphabet. The basis for learning our language is learning the letters that form words, letters that make sounds that form speech.

It was in early December when Parker started actually identifying some letters, especially letters that he saw regularly, like those in his name. For Christmas he got an alphabet puzzle and quickly picked up on the others, to now–he’s learned the entire alphabet. He doesn’t know the song yet, but can identify each letter individually. He likes to sit down with his puzzle and tell me the letters, or sit down in our laps as we write each letter.

It’s incredible to watch his little mind work like that; to identify a letter. When we’re out and about, he likes to tell us the letters he sees. Such an incredible ability to watch a 17 month old practice.

My New Year’s Resolution, well, more of a quest, really.

As many of you know, one of my hobbies and interests is beer tasting. No, not Budweiser, or Killian’s, or Blue Moon, I’m talking legitimate craft beer tasting. I’ve established this year a list of over 30 beers that I would like to sample by the end of the year. Some I’ve had, most I haven’t. With the availability of so many great beers in America, my list is mostly American, and many of them are consider top 50 beers in the US. This list is fluid and subject to change obviously as other beers appear on my radar, availability, etc. With that, the list:

– Bell’s Hopslam Ale
– Bell’s Two-Hearted IPA
– Bell’s Winter/Christmas Ales
– Founder’s Breakfast Stout
– Founder’s Canadian Breakfast Stout
– Founder’s Centennial IPA
– Founder’s Dirty Bastard
– Columbus IPA
– Columbus Winter Warmer
– Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale
– Sierra Nevada Bigfoot
– Sierra Nevada Summerfest
– Sierra Nevada Celebration
– Sierra Nevada Harvest Wet Hop IPA
– Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA
– Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA
– Dogfish Head 60-Minute IPA
– Stone Arrogant Bastard
– Stone Ruination
– Stone IPA
– Sam Adams Revolutionary Rye
– Sam Adams Pumpkin Ale
– Sam Adams Noble Pils
– Great Lakes Christmas Ale
– Avery Old Jubilation
– Anchor Our Special Ale
– New Holland Mad Hatter
– Troegs Nugget Nectar
– Rochefort 10 (my one foreign brew)

As you can see, I’ve already crossed two off my list for this year, but feel free to use this list if you’re just getting into craft beer and want some good ones to sample, or even if you’re already established, feel free to join me on this journey.

Cheers!

Happy New Year!

2011 has arrived.  My initial thought on the new year is, can it possibly eclipse 2010?

2010 was a big year for our family. It might be early, but I don’t feel like 2011 will have as many major life events, but perhaps that exactly what our family needs right now. We have nothing major on the agenda this year, but then again, we didn’t really have any last year either.

I’m not really big on the whole ‘resolutions’ thing, but I certainly hope that our family remains strong and healthy. I want to get out of the house more when we’re all home together. I want to do fun things with Parker. I’d like to make some changes to the house, just to put our signature on it. I hope we can spend more time with our families, both immediate and extended.

Honestly, I guess in a way, I just want to spend this year being a family and–hopefully–with relatively little fanfare.

Happy New Year!
